Our vision is to create inspiring and enduring architecture.
Purcell Miller Tritton is a leading architectural practice with a reputation for excellence established by 60 years of work on many of the UK’s best-loved buildings and places.

With a large team and nationwide resources across twelve studios, we offer an invaluable wealth and breadth of expertise. Our regional network means we can handle projects of all types and sizes throughout the UK and Ireland. We are also undertaking projects across the world, working to international conservation standards in places as diverse as Antarctica and Hong Kong.

We work across eight sectors. Each is led by an experienced partner who is passionate about their area of expertise. Our ability to combine local knowledge with sector expertise means that we can provide a tailored service to our clients.

We employ over 160 talented people, and it’s their flair, enthusiasm and commitment that make our service exceptional. We believe that it’s crucial to listen to our clients to ensure we fully grasp their long-term objectives and aspirations.

Our integrated management system is certified to both ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and we are developing our corporate responsibility status in relation to the draft guidance given in DIS ISO 26000.

Sustainability

Whether we’re working on a historic building or a new building scheme, a sustainable approach is inherent to our ethos. As a result, we are leaders in the field of environmentally responsible design.

We are expert at assessing the context and constraints of a project, and we take time to understand our client’s requirements for the building, its contents and users. Offering the benefit of our expertise, we discuss the client’s aspirations and agree clear objectives from the outset. We also believe that it is crucial to set a reasonable budget for environmental systems that deliver realistic payback.

Project reviews and design dialogues allow our teams to explore possibilities and test concepts, and all of our projects are reviewed for environmental impact at key stages during development and on completion using a pioneering in-house procedure: the Purcell Miller Tritton Index of Sustainability (PIOS). PIOS was introduced to act as a prompt to all architects to ensure that consideration has been given to relevant aspects and to remind them to encourage clients to consider sustainability.

The biggest impact of our business on sustainability is the performance of our designs. Our strategy is to:

• Raise awareness of the sustainability issues facing us as architects by: implementing our Environmental Management System; communicating issues through the practice at Sustainability Days and through our Vision for the business; and by presenting at symposia.
• Provide a central focus to support development of technical knowledge by appointment of our Head of Sustainability, creation of a Sustainability Group and using intranet resources.
• Use the Purcell Miller Tritton Index of Sustainability (PIOS) to provide a benchmark assessment on every project.
• Support CPD to develop the skills of our existing staff and position the business to attract talented individuals who are focused on sustainability.

Our Performance

Our commitment to running an environmentally responsible business is demonstrated by our ISO 14001 Environmental Management System, which provides a framework for independent auditing of our progress towards clear targets. The practice is also a member of the Green Register of Construction Professionals and was ranked as one of the top 60 green companies in the UK by the Sunday Times in their 2010 Green List.

In the last two years we have invested in developing our processes and improving performance. The practice is currently finalising a carbon governance strategy for carbon reductions between 2010 and 2020 and improving our PIOS tool to include simple estimates of carbon savings on our projects.

Testimonials:
“We’ve worked with the practice since 2002, and the level of commitment and enthusiasm has been unparalled. They have been, in every sense, team members in our project delivery.”
Ron Inglis, Service Manager Museums and Galleries, Nottingham City Council.

“With ambitious government targets to address carbon footprints and promote renewable energy sources, we’re finding that businesses are more willing to share their experience and research, helping to energise the whole industry, from suppliers and designers through to contractors and end users.
We’ve been sharing our own in-house Index of Sustainability (PIOS) with fellow consultants. It’s a practical tool to assess every project, regardless of building type, against green benchmarks at key stages, including post-completion.”
